Listeriosis: Test results on imported apples in a couple of days
A filepic of Gala (red) and Granny Smith apples. Following scares of listeriosis, these apples have since been restricted entry into Malaysia from the US.
The Health Ministry has directed its Food Safety and Quality Division to inspect and take samples of all imported apples to test whether they are tainted with Listeriosis bacteria.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the division had been ordered to inspect and take samples of apples, especially in Sibu and Kuching in Sarawak.
"The results of the test will be out in the next two to three days. However, this process will be continuous," he told reporters after an aid presentation ceremony for flood victims here Sunday.
Media reports on Saturday said that two types of apples, namely 'Gala' and 'Granny Smith' from the United States, suspected of being contaminated with the bacteria, has been barred from being brought into the country.
"So far, there has not been any reports of bacterial infection among the people. The public need not worry about the bacteria as the ministry will be monitoring the situation," added Dr Subramaniam.
