The vessel formerly known as KD Rahmat, which suffered a leaking hull causing it to list near Marina Waterfront this morning is no longer an asset of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).
RMN Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Datuk Seri Mohamad Roslan Mohamad Ramli said the vessel had been privatised and was under the supervision of the Perak state government.
"The vessel sprang a leak at 3 am. The state government has been notified of the incident. The RMN will send divers to assess the damage before further action is taken," he told reporters, here today.
Mohamad Roslan said the decommissioned vessel docked on the Lumut beach and was turned into a museum or an exhibition boat since 2011.
"The public was stopped from visiting the vessel since 2011 for security reasons," he said.
Images of the listing vessel near Marina Waterfront went viral on Facebook this afternoon.
