A 54-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the murder of an Indonesian man over a RM500 debt at Kg Tanjung Aru here Saturday night.
Labuan police chief Supt Adzhar Othman said the suspect, a fisherman, was picked up at the scene of the crime the same day.
In the 2pm incident, the deceased, identified as Yahudin Sahib, 54, had approached the suspect at his house to ask for the money he owed but a scuffle ensued instead, resulting in the deceased sustaining injuries that proved to be fatal.
"The neighbour of the deceased who overheard screams of someone asking for help had gone to investigate the cause of the screams. The neighbour went to the house and saw the deceased lying on the floor helplessly," he said.
Following interrogation, police believe the deceased was beaten up with a hard object.
The suspect who had no previous criminal record had since been remanded under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
