The Louis Vuitton Logo Gets Reimagined
Louis Vuitton’s “Celebrating Monogram” project came about in honour of the house’s 160th anniversary. The project recruited creative visionaries Karl Lagerfeld, Rei Kawakubo, Cindy Sherman, Frank Gehry, Marc Newson and Louboutin to reinterpret the renowned Vuitton Monogram with a series of accessories. Each creative enhanced or subverted the logo that has long lived in both the public’s awareness and in their closets.
Cindy Sherman designed what every jet-setter diva could dream of, a foldout trunk complete with labelled drawers, a makeup mirror, and a stool and covered in retro travel stamps from make-believe destinations. Karl Lagerfeld was in the mood for more of a fight (of the classy kind). His punching bag and trunk (punching bag might be inspired by his latest Coco Coach FW 15 shoot). The enigmatic Comme des Garcon designer Rei Kawakubo designed a traditional tote partially burned out with three holes revealing the bag’s lining and merely a “Louis Vu…”

Frank Gehry explored the architectural sense of style, having been commissioned to design the Fondation Louis Vuitton, a grand contemporary art museum in Paris’s Bois de Boulogne, arranged to open this month. Gehry’s design is a rectangular box, but twisted slightly. Marc Newson designed a backpack with a classic logoed design topped with jazzy orange fleece. It definitely isn’t your typical garden-variety backpack. Louboutin fashioned up a caddy, a classic Parisian bag so that you can be extremely glamorous while grocery shopping.

Each creation is playfully distinguished by the unique signature of its creator.
