Low Yat pandemonium: KPDNKK to begin probe, cooperate with copyright owner

The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister (KPDNKK) will launch an investigation into an alleged fighting that broke out at Low Yat Plaza, Saturday night after a man was detained for allegedly being cheated by a mobile phone trader.

However, its Kuala Lumpur director, Muez Abdul Aziz said his team is still waiting for the official statement from a suspect who is now under police custody.

"We will cooperate with the police where an investigation will commence shortly after an official statement is being made by the user.

"The ministry will also work with the copyright owners who are also the manufacturers of the phones to determine whether the devices were genuine or counterfeit," said Muez, when contacted by Astro AWANI on Sunday.

Muez also comfirmed receiving reports of alleged fraudulent purchase of mobile phones and gadgets at Low Yat Plaza.

"We have received reports regarding fraudulent transactions. We have carried out monitoring and intelligence activities at Low Yat Plaza," he said.

Suez also advised consumers to keep their cool and control their emotion if they detect any fraud by traders.

"We are governed by law, report directly to the ministry and we will start an investigation based on the reports received. Do not follow emotion," said Muez, who also confirmed that the case would be investigated under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.

In the 7.50pm incident, the men were said to have gone berserk when they started beating several shop attendants at a phone shop.

It was believed that the man was taken in by the plaza’s security guard who then handed him to the police. Some of his friends, who were upset with his arrest retaliated and started taking matters into their own hand
