LRT, Monorail fares to go up next year

With the recent announcement of an almost 15% hike in electricity tariff, the public could also expect to see an increase in LRT and Monorail fares beginning next year.

Fares for KTM services are also expected to go up next year, The Malay Mail Online reported.

The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar reportedly said the commission was reviewing the fare structure.

He said LRT rates are due for an increase as there has not been any hike for the past 10 years.

Although it is unclear how much the increase will be, Syed Hamid assured that the review will be comprehensive and the hike will not burden the public.

He said the increase should be a win-win situation between users' affordability and industry sustainability.

SPAD, he said, was aware that the hike in energy and fuel cost could bring negative impact with low ridership, adding that the commission would also monitor all rail operators' operation and maintenance cost.

Syed Hamid also assured that any decision made pertaining to the hike would take into consideration a long-term rail industry sustainability.

At present, LRT fares start from 70 cents and could go up to RM5.90.
