LRT train makers given until next week to find permanent brake solution

Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) has given a deadline until next week for two foreign companies to find a permanent solution to resolve the Light Rail Transit (LRT) trains braking system failure.

Its group managing director Datuk Azmi Abdul Aziz said he had already notified both companies during yesterday's meeting with them.

"I had urged them, this is not an option, they must find a permanent solution to solve this problem immediately," he told Bernama here today.

Azmi said he hoped by then all 70 LRT trains plying the Kelana Jaya line would run smoothly without any problem.

The two companies are a Canadian train manufacturing company and a German braking system manufacturer.

However, Azmi refused to disclose the next course of actions by Prasarana if they failed to meet the deadline.

Previously Bernama reported that Azmi had stated both of the companies were notified about the deficiencies of the brake system on its four-car trains earlier this year.

He added the two LRT incidents which occured on Wednesday, was the sixth such incident since Feb 11 this year involving braking system failure for trains plying the Kelana Jaya line.

Both incidents have caused temporary disruption in services for the route and thick smoke was seen billowing from the trains.

The first incident at the Setiawangsa station occured at 8am while the second happened at 12.18pm near the Universiti station in Petaling Jaya.
