KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) is targeting a fund of RM400,000 to help over 3,000 visually-impaired people, whose livelihood has been affected with the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
MAB chief executive officer, George Thomas said through the initiative, in collaboration with the Asia School of Business, the funds collected would be channelled to providing food baskets worth between RM100 and RM120 per family.
“So far, the total collection has reached RM123,676 since it was launched on Jan 24. We aim to start distributing the food baskets in early February.
"Each basket will contain 11 types of basic necessities including rice, oil, sugar, flour, noodles and milk, and can last up to 10 days for a family," he told Bernama.
Meanwhile, visually-impaired Mautitrika Abdul Taif, 43, from Sabah, said he has not worked for 14 days following implementation of the MCO since Jan 13.
"All this time, I have been supporting my family with the commission I earned as a masseuse in Brickfields, but now I have no source of income,” he added.
Those who wish to donate to the fund, can do so through Maybank Berhad account number 514057637836, in the name of the Malaysian Association for the Blind with a reference note, covid19 ASB.
