MACC begins probe on misuse of royalty funds allegation

KUALA LUMPUR:The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has begun investigation into the issue of misappropriation of funds from the collection of song copyright royalties received from industrial entrepreneurs in Malaysia for the purpose of 'public performance'.

A Sinar Harian report quoting a source said the royalties collected were suspected to not be channelled to artists or songwriters.

"An operation was conducted yesterday at four offices believed to be involved in the royalty collection process, namely Recording Performers Malaysia (RPM), Performers 'And Artistes' Interests (PRISM), Music Copyright Protection Body (MACP) and Public Performance Malaysia (PPM).

"So far, the MACC is taking the documents involved for study and research. Several individuals involved will be called to assist in the investigation," added the source.

The Sinar Harian report added MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations), Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya when contacted on Thursday confirmed that his party has started an investigation.

However, he said, it was still too early to comment on the investigation.

"So, all parties are asked not to sensationalise this issue and give sufficient time to the MACC to conduct a transparent, fair and professional investigation.

"Investigations are being conducted under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009," he added.
