MACC detains 57, including 10 civil servants

The Sarawak Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained 57 people, including 10 civil servants for corruption-related offences since the beginning of this year until last Monday.

Its director, Badrul Shah Norman said the number included 13 members of the public and a civil servant who were detained through the 'Ops Tukul' which was launched in October to combat corruption connected to illegal logging.

He said 42 had already been brought to court, including nine arrested in Ops Tukul.

Speaking at a dinner event with the media at the Sarawak Golf Club last night, he said the MACC and Sarawak Forestry Department had organised a corporate-integrity pledge ceremony with timber industry players in Sarawak.

"This is a historic milestone as this is the first time that these giant companies in the timber industry in Sarawak have taken this pledge to be transparent and have integrity in their business dealings and logging activities," he said.

Badrul said the MACC would continue to be more proactive in tackling corruption issues brought up by the public and is determined to engage with non-governmental organisations, community leaders, the private sector and local communities in sending out the anti-corruption message.
