A police inspector was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Lahad Datu branch for allegedly soliciting and receiving a bribe amounting to RM3,500.

The 37-year-old suspect, was arrested at Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters Traffic Office at about 11.30pm on suspicion of committing the act as an inducement for him not to bring a trailer driver to be prosecuted in court for a fatal road accident in 2012.

According to a source, the accident occurred in February 2012 which resulted in the death of one person and injured another.

It was understood that after investigation was completed, there was no instruction to charge the trailer driver.

However the suspect was believed to have taken the opportunity and asked for a bribe of RM3,500 from the trailer driver supposedly so that the latter would not be charged and sentenced to jail.

Sabah MACC director Datuk Sazali Salbi, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and that the suspect would be remanded tomorrow to facilitate investigation under Section 17 (a) of ASPRM 2009.
