MACC solves 85 per cent of corruption cases reported last year

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has solved 85 per cent or 781 of the 919 investigation papers that were opened in last year, compared with 81.6 per cent in 2013 and 75 per cent in 2012.

In a statement issued here today, the commission said the number of cases brought to court also increased last year, which was 317, from 289 in 2013.

"The total fine imposed by the court on offenders for corruption increased to RM13 million last year, compared with RM11.6 million in 2013," it said.

On the 919 investigation papers that were opened, 326 or 35.5 per cent were for accepting bribe, offering bribe (159 or 17.3 per cent), false claim (283 or 30.8 per cent) and abuse of position (69 or 7.5 per cent).

In terms of conviction rate, it said it was still at a good level, which was 78 per cent, compared with 54 per cent when the MACC was formed in 2009.

On value of assets that were forfeited, it amount to RM2.8 million last year.

The MACC attributed its achievement to the transformation programme of the operations sector through the implementation of the management of team investigation (MTI).

The MACC transformation programme focuses on operation, human capital and prevention, implemented in stages since 2010.
