Malaysia COVID-19 cases soar above 5k

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Health (MOH) records a continuous surge of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia, with 5,230 infections detected on Friday (July 15).

This pushes the total cumulative cases in the country to 4,613,998 since the pandemic started in March 2020.

According to MOH, there were 5,219 local transmissions, with 11 consisting of imported cases.

Based on the data from COVIDNOW portal, Selangor leads with 1,877 cases reported, followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,584), Perak (399), Sabah (261), Negeri Sembilan (236), Penang (219), Malacca (140), Johor (107) and Putrajaya (102).

Other states that reported with a two-digit mark were Kedah (76), Pahang (70), Sarawak (68), Kelantan (48), Terengganu (23) and Labuan (12), while Perlis had eight cases.

Active cases currently stood at 41,208, with a total of 1,411 patients hospitalised, 64 of them under intensive care and 44 patients in need of ventilator support.

MOH also reported 2,927 new recoveries, taking the total number of those recovered and discharged to 4,536,946.

There were eight COVID-related deaths reported yesterday, of which one was confirmed as brought-in-dead.

The country has lost a total of 35,844 people to the virus so far.

Malaysia administered 21,788 COVID-19 vaccine doses on Friday, with 85.9 percent of the nation having received at least one dose.

Meanwhile, about 83.8 percent are fully vaccinated, with 49.5 percent having received the first booster and 0.6 percent have received the second booster jabs.
