Malaysia Day: What say you?
Malaysia Day, Sept 16, is often misunderstood as the joining of Sabah and Sarawak into Malaysia. But it is in fact the day that marks the forming of Malaysia where Malaya (Peninsular Malaysia), North Borneo (Sabah), Sarawak, and Singapore (separated in 1965) as one nation in 1963. Malaysia Day can be perceived as the birthday of Malaysia, whereby the Merdeka Day is the day where Malaya was set free from British colonisation. However, there are people who ask: why do we celebrate Malaysia Day? What is the difference between Independence (Merdeka/National) Day and Malaysia Day? How well do the people know the difference between both the days? Will they agree if only Malaysia Day is remembered in the future? Astro AWANI spoke to some people to find out what they think.
