Malaysia hits almost 20,000 COVID-19 cases within 24-hours

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia registers a whopping 19,819 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily tally since the pandemic hit the country.

Daily caseloads breaking records on 10 days in July, as COVID-19 infections soar rapidly in recent weeks.

New daily cases have not gone below the 10,000 mark since Jul 12.

According to the data from the Ministry of Health (MOH), the new cases have brought the national tally of coronavirus infections to 1,183,110.

Just two days ago, the country set a new daily record for COVID-19 deaths, with 219 fatalities reported on Aug 2.

Selangor is still the state with the highest number of daily cases with 8,377,

Kuala Lumpur reported 2,086 cases followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,467), Kedah (1,371), Johor (1,162) and Kelantan (1,003).

Meanwhile, other states that recorded lesser than 1,000 cases are Sabah with 949, followed by Penang (867), Negri Sembilan (800), Perak (662), Pahang (558), Sarawak (552), Melaka (508) and Terengganu (481).

Putrajaya recorded 46 cases, while Perlis had 11 and Labuan logged five cases.

According to the Director General of Health, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, 23 from today's new cases were imported while the remainder of 19,796 were local transmissions.

He said via a Twitter post, active cases with COVID-19 infection now stands at 210,522.

Meanwhile, Malaysia recorded a total of 12,704 recoveries today, bringing the total number of recoveries to 962,733.

Dr Noor Hisham said a total of 257 new deaths were reported, raising the country's death toll to 9,855.

As of today, there are a total of 1,069 patients receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 553 of these patients require respiratory assistance.

Earlier today, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba reported that the country has administered more than 22 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, with more than 7.4 million people fully vaccinated as of Aug 3.
