KUALA LUMPUR: As of yesterday (August 8), Malaysia registered a total of  2,728 new daily COVID-19 cases, taking the overall total of infections in the country to 4,708,552.

Active cases currently stood at 45,770. This figure has been relatively stable over the past two weeks.

According to the Health Ministry (MOH), there were two new imported cases, with 2,726 cases being local transmissions.

Selangor reported the highest of cases with 749, followed by Kuala Lumpur (575), Sabah (265), Perak (245), Penang (201), Negeri Sembilan (146), Johor (116), Kedah (101) and Malacca (101).

Meanwhile, other states that logged with a two-digit mark were Sarawak (55), Pahang (52), Kelantan (44), Terengganu (33), Putrajaya (30), while Perlis had nine cases and Labuan reported six cases.  

Based in the data from the COVIDNOW portal, there were 1,529 patients hospitalised, of which 52 are under intensive care and and 36 of them in need of ventilator support.

MOH recorded a total of 3,856 new recoveries on Sunday, which brings the total number of recovered and discharged to 4,626,756.

The country also recorded another six COVID-related deaths yesterday, pushing the death toll to 36,026 deaths since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. 

Malaysia administered a total of 4,539 COVID-vaccine doses on Sunday, 86 percent of the population having received at least one dose.

About 84.1 percent are fully inoculated, 49.6 percent have received their first booster and 1.2 percent have received their second booster jab.
