Malaysia reports 27,808 COVID-19 cases as of yesterday

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia reported a surge of 27,808 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Friday, bringing the national total to 3,166,023, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).

There are 119 new imported cases, with 27,689 being local transmissions, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah informed.

Dr Noor Hisham said that 99.63 per cent (27,705) of the cases were COVID-19 patients from categories 1 and 2, which had no symptoms or having mild symptoms.

There were also 16 new clusters reported yesterday.

According to the latest data updated on the COVIDNOW portal, Kedah registered a total of 2,537 new COVID-19 cases, followed by Penang (2,088), Kelantan (1,722), Negri Sembilan (1,712), Pahang (1,376), and Kuala Lumpur (1,339).

There were 538 new infections reported in Terengganu, followed by Melaka (524), Perak (489), Labuan (414), Sarawak (390), Perlis (205), and the administrative capital of Putrajaya (129).

The nation has lost another 36 people to COVID-19 yesterday, taking the total of COVID-related deaths to 32,276 so far including those Brought In Dead (BID).

A total of 11 new deaths were logged as BID, which brings the cumulative sum to 6,551 of BID as of last night.

According to MOH, a total of 12,488 new recoveries were reported, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 2,900,682.

There were 235 patients treated in intensive care units (ICU), with 92 COVID-19 positive and 143 suspected of being infected.

Of the patients in ICU, 132 required respiratory assistance, with 55 positive and 77 suspected of being infected.

Meanwhile, the country reported 158,399 vaccine doses administered on Friday alone, and 81.1 per cent of the population have received at least one dose, 78.8 per cent are fully vaccinated and 42.4 per cent have received boosters.
