Malaysian couple detained will be deported if found guilty

The list of charges written by the prosecutor, Anna Arnell includes the prosecution’s office demand for expulsion for the Malaysian couple detained in Sweden for violation of integrity of their children.

Kristofer Stahre, the defending lawyer for Shalwati Nor Shal explained that both his client and her husband, Azizul Raheem Awaluddin will be deported back home if found guilty, only after serving their terms in prison.

Stahre added, if found guilty, it is beyond the court’s jurisdiction to decide whether his client could serve her term in Sweden or in Malaysia.

When asked his opinion on whether both Shalwati and Azizul be expelled immediately instead of subjecting them to a court hearing that is expected to cost a lot, Stahre said that money has never been an issue and everyone is equal under the Swedish legislation.

Shalwati and Azizul are expected to appear for separate court hearings beginning February 18th 2013.

Shalwati, a teacher on unpaid leave and her husband, Azizul Raheem Awaluddin who is a director with Tourism Malaysia had been charged in a Stockholm court on Monday with gross violation of their children's integrity.

In 1979, Sweden became the first nation to ban corporal punishment of children.
