Malaysian killed in Shanghai New Year's eve stampede

A Malaysian student was killed and another injured in the New Year's eve stampede in Shanghai yesterday which killed 36 people, according to the Foreign Ministry.
In a statement Thursday night, it said the Malaysian fatality was a student at a university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.
"Efforts are undertaken to inform the victim's family in Malaysia," it said without disclosing the name of the deceased.
The ministry further said that Malaysian Ooi Hooi Yi, 20, (female) was injured in the 11.30pm incident which occurred at Chen Yi Square in Shanghai's popular riverfront Bund area.
She suffered bleeding in the eyes and some minor bruises and received medical attention at Changzheng Hospital in the Chinese city.
The statement said officials from the Malaysian consulate-general in Shanghai had visited Ooi at the hospital and reported that she was in a stable condition.
"The consulate-general is still checking the list of victims to confirm if there are other Malaysians involved," it added.
