A man was detained in Penang yesterday for allegedly making offensive remarks against the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.
Johor police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the man, aged 34, was arrested at an apartment in Jalan Bandar Bayan Baru in Bayan Lepas at about 5.05pm.
He said the man was arrested following a report lodged yesterday in connection with an offensive statement against Sultan Ibrahim which was sent through the Whatapps application.
Following the arrest, police seized two handphones - a Leagoo Elites and a Nokia -- believed to be used by the suspect to send the offensive statement, he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine of up to RM50,000 or one year's jail, or both, on conviction.
