An elderly man was dead while his daughter was critically injured after their motorcycle was rammed by a van -- which was in the middle of high-speed pursuit with police.
The victim identified as M.Ramanayah, 58, and his daughter, R.Mariammah, 36, from Batu 20, Rawang who was on their way to Kuala Lumpur were thrown from their Modenas Kriss when a grey Nissan Vanette driven by a suspected criminal went into the opposite direction of Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Rawang near Templer Park before rammed into their motorcycle.
Selangor deputy police chief Datuk A.Thaiveegan said the incident started at 11.45am when a police patrol spotted the man, aged 28, inside the van parked at the side of the road of Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Rawang opposite NSK Supermarket in Selayang.
“When police knocked the van’s side windscreen, he was shocked and wind down a little bit before speed off. This prompted police to tail him along the way,” said Thaiveegan.
The suspect then drove the van to Bandar Baru Selayang via Selayang-Kepong Interchange and about several minutes later, he re-enter Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Rawang.
“He entered the Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Rawang in the opposite direction which make several vehicles who were heading to Kuala Lumpur had to avoid any collision with the van,” said Thaiveegan.
Suspect initially rammed two motorcycles and a Perodua Viva car along the six kilometres chase.
“Then he rammed another motorcycle which was ride by Ramanayah and his daughter and the collision eventually cause Ramanayah and his daughter thrown from his motorcycle and landed into a drain at the roadside,” he said.
The van then stalled and the suspect tried to flee the scene by going into a jungle at the roadside but police managed to apprehend him.
Ramanayah sustained grievous injury on his head and body, died on the scene while Mariammah who is also injured was sent to Selayang Hospital and is reported on critical condition.
Three victims who were rammed earlier however sustained light injuries and have been treated at the same hospital.
Initial investigation found that the suspect was high on drug during the chase and from police record, he had been involved with two assault and a theft cases.
The suspect also was found using his brother’s identity card and did not possess any driving licence.
Suspect is currently under police remand for investigation at Gombak district police headquarters.
