Man sentenced to six years' jail for causing infant's death

A man was sentenced to six years' jail by the High Court here today, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder of a six-month-old boy and throwing the remains into a ravine in Genting Highlands, two years ago.

Judge Datuk Wan Ibrahim Wan Arfah passed the sentence after Wong Weng Yew, 43, former manager of a cleaning services company, pleaded guilty to the alternative charge offered by the prosecution.

He was previously charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder which carried the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Wong was charged with culpable homicide without the intention to kill Esmen Zeus Yves at house No: 12, Cannal Garden, Jalan Anggerik Vanilla 31/98S, Section 31, Kota Kemuning here about 8pm on May 28, 2014.

He was charged under Section 304 (b) of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, or with fine.

Wong was also charged with disposing the body by throwing it into the ravine at KM3.6 bend after the Chinese temple heading from Genting Highlands to Kuala Lumpur, in Bentong, Pahang, with intent to evade the law.

For the first charge of causing death, Wong was sentenced to six years' jail. He was sentenced to three years' jail for disposing the body.

Both sentences were ordered to run concurrently. -- BERNAMA
