The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Takes Us Back To The '60s

Every now and then, a movie comes along that makes us want to change our wardrobes or be inspired to dress a certain way. Through the marvels of modern television and movies, we have all been exposed to mod clothing and ‘60s fashion in general i.e. Mad Men, Austin Powers, Down With Love and Moonrise Kingdom. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is back (as this movie is a remake) with even more ‘60s styles: miniskirts, pea coats, and silk Ascot ties. The film is set in (is) 1963 and Guy Ritchie (the film’s director) did a great job in making the movie look fresh and innovative with the help of costume designer Joanna Johnston, who definitely did her fashion history homework.
It was a challenge to dress the actors in eye-catching looks to enhance the narrative without diverting the viewers from all the action. Johnston’s starting point of inspiration was ‘60s icons including Jean Shrimpton and Marisa Berenson as well as fashion designers Emilio Pucci and Pierre Cardin.

So far from the trailer and what we can observe from movie stills, we are in for a treat with cute mini dresses, vivid pantsuits and huge dramatic earrings. Ritchie’s latest movie offers a lot for the senses and our eyes to feast upon while it takes us on a brief journey of women’s fashion in the ‘60s. Alicia Vikander and Elizabeth Debicki are the movie’s stunning leading ladies who sport the very best fashion from the swinging ‘60s.

On the subject of mod movies, the '60s was an era that helped define many styles, from music to how people dressed; the decade offered a unique feel that transcended the tense '50s and the peaceful hippie mind-set of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. We did some research and rounded up some of the movies that are must-watch references when it comes to the mod styles of the ’60s. With their get-ups, makeup and plot lines, they’ve made an enormous impact on the fashion world and now, you can get inspired, too!

Here are some of our favourite ‘60s mod films featuring costumes that pay homage to that stylish era:
