Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) wishes to give its sponsored student child pornography convict, Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, with a second chance, reported online news portal mStar today.
MARA Council member, Nazir Hussin Akhtar Hussin, said the 23-year old Imperial College London student will be given the opportunity to continue his studies at any MARA institution in Malaysia as soon as he ends his five-year jail sentence in the United Kingdom and returns to the country.
"This proposition is a way of our support to him. Personally, I agree. We will provide our support in various forms for him to reshape his identity," the portal quoted Nazir Hussin as saying.
He said the opportunity was not exclusive to Nur Fitri Azmeer as the same opportunity could be given to any other MARA-sponsored student if they were faced with a similar fate.
"The reports provided by the prison authorities there showed that he was on best behaviour until his sentence was reduced, thus it is only right for us to support him again," Nazir Hussin reportedly said.
On May 3, it was reported that MARA had terminated Nur Fitri Azmeer's study loan following his conviction by the Southwark Crown court in London on 13 offences of possessing more than 30,000 pornographic images and videos of children.
He was was caught in possession of 601 videos and images belonging to category A (abuse involving penetrative sexual activity with children), as well as hundreds of category B and C ones.
He was charged last November.
The student who hails from Malim Nawar, Perak, had arrived in the UK last year and was pursuing a study in Mathematics.
