Haziqah  Lazman just got married in June and thinks the marriage incentive by the Selangor government is good for newlyweds and would register to get the money soon, as it’s a way start to her marriage.

She however feels that more needs to be done to make people be aware of the incentive by the Selangor government.

“It would have been great if we were informed when we were married in June about this programme, I did not even know there was such a thing!”

Newly married couple S.Asurajaan and J.Shanmugapriya both aged 27, said the marriage incentive initiated by the Selangor government, is a beneficial program; however it needs more publicity and awareness.

S. Asurajaan said even though RM 400 per couple is not a big sum but the effort should be appreciated.

“RM 400 is not a lot to run a family, but a lot of things can still be done, it’s better than nothing at all. Personally I appreciated the effort,” S. Asurajaan said.

Meanwhile, J.Shanmugapriya is of the opinion that in the future, perhaps the program could collaborate with the Marriage & Divorce National Registration Department to come up with an auto eligibility system just in case some married couples miss out these incentives.

Ho Ching-Ling and Gilbert Wong, a young couple of 25 and 24, who just got married this year in May, said that this is a good initiative as a lot of newlyweds are not that well off and need the support.

“Every bit of monetary support helps especially when you are planning to start a new life together. However they should really look at expanding this incentive to other states especially rural areas,” Ching-Ling said.

The happy couple registered their marriage in Kuala Lumpur and is unfortunately not eligible for this incentive.

On the other hand, Samantha Foo and Samuel Liew who registered in Selangor in March, feel that this incentive has no real effect on them and it is an extra effort to go and register and collect the money.

“Why do we need to register again with the government when our marriage is already in the system? It is very troublesome to do so as these centres may not be open on the weekend,” Samantha said.

Samuel agrees and believes that more needs to be done to incentivise newlyweds.

“If you want your programme to be successful, you need a good idea and you need to promote it properly so that everybody is aware of it, and ensure easy registration online”

“Honestly RM200 cannot even last you for two weeks or even one week depending on where you live etc,” he chips in.

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had urged couples who marry this year to register their names at any of the 56 community service centres in the state to receive the marriage incentive of RM200 each.

He said the incentive was only for couples aged 35 and below and they must be Selangor-born or having resided in Selangor for at least 15 years.

Khalid said each year; Selangor recorded more than 25,000 couples tying the knot. However, only 170 couples have registered with the state government to receive the incentive, he added.
