A total of 12 police officers have been detained to assist into the investigation in connection with human trafficking on the Malaysia-Thailand border.
According to Deputy Home Minister, Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, four of the detainees were from the Royal Malaysian Police while eight more were from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Malaysian Inspector-general of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar did not dispute the possibility of the involvement of the country’s defence personnel including police officers in human trafficking syndicate responsible in the mass death of refugees found in Wang Kelian, Perlis, recently.
Khalid had earlier said that no quarters will be exempted from facing any penalties -- including the local authorities, the Forestry Department or government personnel – if they are found directly linked to the syndicate.
“I don’t refute the possibility of any involvement of our police officers – they too will have to face the music – if enough evidence is found. No one will be spared from the laws in this matter,” said Khalid during a press conference held after the launching ceremony of the 208th Police Day held at the University Malaya Medical Centre, here today.
Since the discovery of the mass graves and camps near the Malaysia-Thailand border on May 25, no latest discoveries have been made.
“We have done thorough screening and coming from Tangga 100 to Kampung Y. We strongly believe that there are no more graves or camps built by any refugees,” said Khalid.
