KUALA LUMPUR:Simpang Renggam Member of Parliament, Dr Maszlee Malik has announced his withdrawal as a member of the pro-tem committee of  Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang).

According to Maszlee, the decision was made based on the findings of a field study and a detailed survey of the aspirations and needs of the majority of the people.

The former Minister of Education of the Pakatan Harapan era asserted that he was confident that the people were fed up with the politics of power play by elite politicians.

"People want politicians who are focused on serving and really solving the problems that the people are facing now," he said in a statement on Monday.

In this regard, Maszlee said, he will continue his efforts in the education change movement through his capacity as an Independent member of Parliament.

"I believe change does not require status and position, but desire and opportunity," he added.

Recently, a statutory declaration (SD) signed by Maszlee in giving support to Port Dickson Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the ninth Prime Minister went viral.

To this day, however, Maszlee or his officers have never confirmed or denied the SD.

Maszlee's explanation today also answered the question of why his name was not mentioned in Pejuang’s statement regarding support for the 2021 Budget.

The Pejuang statement distributed to the media yesterday only mentioned the names of the four Pejuang founders, namely Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and two other MPs Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah and Datuk Dr Shahruddin Md Salleh.
