May 15 for mention of illegal farm operators charged with bribing NSC officers

The Sessions Court here today fixed May 15 for mention of a case involving two farm operators in the Cameron Highlands who were charged with offering and giving bribes to a National Security Council officer.
Judge Datuk Habibah Mohamed Yusof set the date following an application by the prosecution, conducted by prosecuting officer from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Kamariah Seman.
Last April 6, Law Hee Thiam, 38, and Chan Kok Fong, 40, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Law was alleged to have given bribe of RM15,000 to NSC officer Sanifah Yusof as an inducement for action not to be taken against a farm which he cultivated without a permit at the Gunong Siku Forest Reserve in the Cameron Highlands.
As for Chan, he was charged with three counts of offering and giving bribes, totalling RM24,000, to Sanifah, also as an inducement for action not to be taken against a farm which he cultivated without a permit in the Ringlet Forest Reserve in the Cameron Highlands.
The two men were alleged to have committed the offences between April 8 and May 19, 2015, at the Coffee House of Heritage Hotel, Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands.
They were charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 which carries up to 20 years'' jail and a fine of five times the amount of bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if found guilty.
