MCA keeps mum on Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election

Its President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said, although Bukit Gelugor had been MCA's traditional seat, the party had yet to decide whether to contest in the by-election.

"We have discussed it in the meeting. The result of the meeting will be discussed with Barisan Nasional chairman (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) and we will keep the media informed about it," he told reporters after chairing the party's presidential council meeting at Wisma MCA, here, Tuesday.

The Election Commission has fixed May 25 as polling day for the Bukit Gelugor by-election, following the death of its incumbent Karpal Singh in a car accident on April 17.

Nomination is fixed on May 12 while early voting is on May 21.

The late Karpal Singh, who was the former DAP chairman, won the parliamentary seat in last year's general election with a 42,706-vote majority over Barisan Nasional's Teh Beng Yeam, who garnered 13,597 votes.

On hudud, Liow urged DAP and PKR to clear the air over PAS's decision to table the Private Member's Bill on the matter in Parliament.

DAP and PKR owed the people, especially the Chinese, an explanation on Pakatan Rakyat's official stance on the ambiguity which arose from the PAS' hudud move, he said.

On another matter, Liow said the MCA would launch the party transformation campaign themed "Stronger Together" this Saturday at 9.30am at the Tunku Abdul Rahman College, Setapak.
