Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has asked the operators of social networking website Facebook to shutdown a fake account using the identity of UMNO deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Commission chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi said he asked for Facebook's assistance to immediately suspend the "Tansri Muhyiddin Yassin" account for investigations to be conducted.
"There is no report lodged on the matter but we did receive information about the account around 1pm today and we have requested for Facebook to suspend it immediately," he told Astro AWANI.
The phony account was detected at 8.30am today when it posted a statement claiming that the UMNP disciplinary committee had acted against vice-presidential candidate Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.
It also stated that Mukhriz had been dropped as an UMNO VP candidate.
The post also claimed that the UMNO disciplinary committee had decided that the candidate was found to have violated party ethics and had distributed money at a special programme recently.
Muhyiddin has since denied posting such a statement.
