MCMC: Do not panic seeing bully videos on social media

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has advised the public not to panic when they see videos on social media depicting violence such as bullying.

Its chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said they should instead immediately report it to the police or the MCMC so that investigation could be made.

"Do not be quick to make assumptions as sometimes it could be an old issue which has been revived," he told reporters after attending a ceremony to hand over donations collected by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Humanitarian Fund for Gaza, here yesterday.

He said the public should not quickly spread such videos as it could lead to unpleasantness.

Mohamed Sharil was asked to comment on two videos depicting bullying incidents involving students which were spread on social media recently.

Investigations found the video was of an incident involving a student of a school in Pontian, Johor in 2010 while another was of an 11-year-old boy being beaten by his seniors in at the orphanage of a hostel in Perlis in May this year.

At the ceremony, Communications and Multimedia Minister handed over a cheque for RM306,989.40 collected under the initiative to Palestine's ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Anwar H.Al Agha.
