If necessary, MCMC will also request social media providers such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to block access to videos and photos.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is actively monitoring social media users who are spreading seditious and provocative statements which may incite racial tension and disrupt public order, to avoid any untoward incident.
MCMC Monitoring and Enforcement Division chief, Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin said MCMC with the cooperation of communications service providers would identify these irresponsible social media users.
"In addition, the service providers will also be required to keep the evidences to be used in court later," he said in a statement here Tuesday.
He said MCMC would take action against those who spread lies and baseless allegations which could undermine security and public order, under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
He said MCMC would also request social media providers such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to block access to videos and photos uploaded with the aim to aggravate the situation.
MCMC also urged members of the public with knowledge of irresponsible social media users to inform MCMC for action to be taken, he said.
