Meat cartel scandal: Two Johor MAQIS officers detained

JOHOR BAHRU: Two officers of the state’s Malaysian Inspection and Quarantine Services Department (MAQIS) were detained over the issues of the smuggling in of non-halal meat.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained them on suspicion of being involved in corruptions over the smuggling in activities of frozen non-halal raw meat from banned source countries.
According to sources, both male suspects, aged 27 and 31 years, respectively, were detained at the Johor MACC office last night at 11 pm.
Johor MACC director, Datuk Azmi Alias, when contacted, confirmed the arrests but declined to comment further as the case was under investigation.
He said the officers were taken to the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court this morning for a remand order.
