MELAKA: Datuk Khaidhirah Abu Zahar has described her appointment as the first female Deputy Speaker of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly as an honour for women and young leaders.
Khaidhirah, 37, the state assemblyman for Rim, said her appointment showed that the Melaka government appreciated the role of young leaders in the state's administration and that they have a chance to be given bigger roles.
"I too was surprised to learn that I have become the first woman and young leader to be appointed as the Deputy Speaker. I will discharge my duty with full responsibility.
"I hope this appointment will be an inspiration to other young women, and I would like to thank everyone especially the Melaka state leadership for giving me this big mandate," she said.
She was speaking to reporters when met outside the first meeting (special) of the first session of the 15th Melaka State Assembly here today.
Khaidhirah, a daughter of former Melaka Chief Minister the late Datuk Seri Abu Zahar Ithnin, said the new responsibility would help to make her a more mature leader in state administration and politics.
She said when chairing the state assembly meeting she would ensure that elected representatives give priority to issues affecting the people.
"Irrelevant controversies should be avoided to ensure the smooth running of the assembly," she added.
