Menswear Designers That Made An Impression During KLFW 2015

Astro Publication 26/08/2015 | 09:03 MYT
Menswear has been getting increasing attention of late, not only internationally but locally, too. Proof of that has been the recent KLFW where we saw plenty of menswear labels trooping out on the runways and from what we saw, these menswear designers are slated to make it big in the near future. These guys definitely mean business and each new year brings a fresh crop of fashion talents onto the scene as KLFW provides the perfect platform for up-and-coming designers. This year already looks set to be exceptional for innovative yet refreshingly wearable designs.

Zakwan Anuar
Born and raised in Pahang, Zakwan Anuar has garnered a strong following amid the fashion-savvy set and he is known for his minimalistic, sleek aesthetic that combines masculinity and elegance. He is a self-taught designer with a hungry passion for fashion and decided to pursue his dream of launching his own label at 20. His latest Spring/Summer 2016 collection is a tribute to the modern-day cowboy with monochromatic pieces that are simple but with notable structural cuts. It’s western nomad with a modern twist – i.e. leather biker jackets, houndstooth prints and red blazers.

Freedom by Eric Choong
Freedom by Eric Choong is a collaboration between Malaysian fashion designer Eric Choong and F.M.S. (Freedom Men’s Style). In spite of being in the fashion industry for over two decades, “Freedom by Eric Choong” which was launched in 2012 is Eric’s first foray into ready-to-wear menswear. The collection pushes traditional menswear to new boundaries with polished individualism and attitude, designed to be versatile yet aesthetically urban to be worn for any occasion. The Spring/Summer 2016 collection marries resort wear, tropical easy-breezy fabrics, and Japanese components with distinctive Indo-Chinese prints. It offers an emphasis on comfort with relaxed silhouettes in ‘songket’ and batik prints.

Comoddity
Comoddity’s latest Spring/Summer 2016 collection truly projects a fashion-forward urban man with an appetite for sartorial refinement. The collection consists of mainly boxy tops and a monochrome palette for the modern man inspired by the well-known fictitious monster Frankenstein. Comoddity is a breath of fresh air with eye-catching designs, clean cut-lines and structured silhouettes that are easy to wear. It offers quality workmanship with a unique twist to wardrobe staples for the stylish urban man with a fashionable interplay of fabrics, quirky appliques, patchwork and embroidery.

Quhji
Produced by designer Kaer Kazami, Quhji has always been sort of a mix of experimental and conceptual. Quhji features outfits of full length skirts, onesies and floral suits. The collection plays around with colours and fabrics, adding on accessories to complete the somewhat flamboyant collection. Departing from the norm, the brand’s aesthetics can be summed up with three words – abstract, futuristic and avant garde. The understated hints of Malaysian and Japanese influences give the label's collection outstanding appeal.

Megwak

Fashion designer MEG and fashion stylist Wak Doyok came together to create Megwak. The collection boasts colourful suits that will make sure you stand out in a crowd, well-tailored blazers and even a couple of double-breasted suits made an appearance. If you’re looking for flashy suit jackets and classic chinos, you’ll definitely find them in Megwak’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection. Wak Doyok stands out as rebellious and anti-mainstream because of his eccentricity but he is also one of the most prevalent public figures in Malaysia. Needless to say, he is a trendsetter and the collection echoes his top-notch taste.
