A man, believed to be mentally-unstable, ran amok and punched his octogenarian grandmother to death at the family home in Pekan Hilir, Wakaf Baharu here today.
The assailant rained several blows on 84-year-old Che Minah Hassan's face, killing her on the spot at the house in Kampung Pasir.
At the same time, he did not spare his mother, either.
He pounced on Rahimah Che Will, 60, and began punching her face until she collapsed in the incident about 7am.
A police team detained the 35-year-old suspect to facilitate investigations into the murder of his grandmother and causing hurt to his mother.

He said the case was classified as murder.
Zaharudin said the suspect had undergone psychiatric treatment at the Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan, Perak and Psychiatry Hospital in Kota Baharu, about two years ago.
