LIOW: We have instructed MAS to expedite the compensation process.
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has been urged to speed up the process of determining the rightful beneficiaries of those who were on-board the ill-fated Flight MH17.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said, there were still a few families who have yet to be compensated for the deaths of their loved ones.
He said, the delay in compensation was caused by the identification process which needs to be carried out by MAS in determining the rightful beneficiaries.
“We have instructed MAS to expedite the compensation process. I have been made to understand only a few families have not received their compensation. This is because we need to determine who are the rightful beneficiaries,” he said.
Liow also urged the United Nations (UN) to play a role in helping Malaysia bring those responsible for the tragedy to justice.
He said, the international investigative body that had been set up come up with a report as soon as possible so that the real culprits behind the incident can be identified.
Flight MH17 had been shot down over Ukranian air space on July 17, last year killing all 298 passengers and crew members on board.
The plane was believed to have been shot down by a surface-to-air missile launched by pro-Russian forces, but has been denied vehemently by Russia.
Liow was met after opening the Gopeng MCA division annual general meeting at Hill City Hotel, Ipoh on Sunday.
