Malaysia has yet to ascertain who is in possession of the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH17’s black box, the key to establishing what happened to the doomed airliner.

"I heard about it but the report is not verified. We have yet to receive an official notice from the Ukrainian authorities, who has set up a commission and are leading the investigations," Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

"Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman has contacted his counterpart in Ukraine and they have given assurance to safeguard the corridor for us to move into the area. They are also negotiating with the rebels to ensure the site is intact and all records to be protected," he said in a press briefing at the Sama Sama Hotel in Sepang today.

News service Interfax reported that rebel Russian separatist forces in Ukraine had already found the black box and agreed to give it to a Russian-run regional air safety authority.

The black box is reported to be on its way to Moscow.

The Boeing-777 airliner, en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam, was reportedly shot down over Ukraine by a surface-to-air missile Thursday but it was unclear who fired the weapon, US officials said.

AFP reported that intelligence analysts are reviewing data from a military satellite and other sources to determine whether the missile was launched by pro-Moscow separatists in Ukraine, Russian troops across the border or Ukrainian government forces.

All 283 passengers and 15 crew on-board perished in the incident.
