A former son-in-law of Information Communication and Culture minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim has been fined RM600 or six days' jail for conspiring in a marriage without consent, seven years ago.
Dr Raja Badrul Hisham Raja Zezeman Shah, 43, pleaded guilty to the charge before Syariah Lower Court Judge Asrul Azlan Embong on Jan 30, 2013.
However, Syarie senior prosecuting officer Salehan Md Yatim has filed a notice of appeal to the Syariah Court Registrar against the decision.
He told reporters here today that the prosecution was not satisfied with the punishment imposed.
Dr Raja Badrul Hisham was alleged to have conspired with Faizah Sidi to marry her without the prior consent of the Federal Territories Marriage, Divorce and Annulment Registrar.
He was charged under Section 133 of the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984, which carries a maximum fine of RM1,000 or a jail term of up to six months, or both, upon conviction.
Faizah was fined RM500 or five days' jail after pleading guilty to a related offence, under Section 40(2) of the same Act.
Dr Raja Badrul Hisham and Faizah were accused of committing the offence at a house in Bandar Seri Permaisuri Cheras here on April 7, 2006.
Both paid the fine.
Dr Raja Badrul Hisham had divorced the minister's duaghter Malini Rais on Aug 10, 2011.
