Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar stressed today he refused to be influenced by political statements on the civil suit filed by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) against certain individuals who allegedly have misappropriated 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds.
Instead, the police will remain focused on the on-going investigation into the issues revolving around the country's strategic investment firm which has now entered its second phase.
"I have said before, whatever action taken in US is civil in nature, we do not interfere with civil action.
"Don't drag us (police) here and there with political statements," he told a press conference after presenting awards to the staff of the 36th ASEANAPOL conference in Bukit Aman here today.
He was asked to comment on the statement by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan that it was obvious the so-called ‘Malaysian Official 1' (MO1) referred to by the DOJ in its suit was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
However, speaking during an interview with BBC, Abdul Rahman said, although it was mentioned in the suit, MO1 was not the subject of investigation but was merely referred to in the inquiry.
On the latest development in the police investigation into 1MDB, Khalid said the Attorney General's Chambers have returned the papers to the police and have instructed for certain things to be carried out before submitting it back.
However, so far, he said, no statement has been recorded from witnesses abroad.
This is because, the process requires mutual legal assistance (MLA) and it would take some time.
