The family home of lawyer Kamal Hisham Jaafar who is embroiled in a controversy for breach of trust, in Kampung Majidee here was hit by a Molotov cocktail early Thursday morning.
Johor Baharu Selatan District Police Chief ACP Sulaiman Salleh, who confirmed the incident, said it happened at about 5 am and was discovered by Kamal Hisham's mother who detected the smell of kerosene outside the house.
"When the complainant went out of the house, she found two glass and plastic bottles containing kerosene burning in the front portion of the house.
"One of the bottles hit the wall of the house while the other hit the side of a multi-purpose vehicle," he said in a statement here.
Sulaiman said in the incident, the victim's family suffered losses of about RM300,000 from the damage to the wall and the right car door.
Meanwhile Kamal Hisham's nephew, Muhammad Khuzairy Kamarul Halim, 20, told Bernama that at the time of the incident, there were 10 family members in the house.
He was sleeping in one of the rooms in the front of the house while his grandmother (Kamal Hisham's mother) Kalsom Idris, 70, was praying.
"My grandmother said while she was praying, she detected the smell of gasoline, so she woke me up. We checked the house compounds and saw the living room had already caught fire and on top of the Toyota Alphard caused by two bottles of gasoline which had been thrown in the direction of the house.
"We then lodged a police report at the Majidee police station," he said.
According to Muhammad Khuzairy, this was the third case of treachery which had hit them.
Previously, an individual had thrown a can of paint into the house to scare them.
