A month after GST: Almost 5,000 complaints received - Customs

Subromaniam said most of the complaints were on the price hikes and differences of prices of products since the implementation of the new tax regime.
Since the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) had received almost 5,000 complaints.
According to Customs GST director Datuk Subromaniam Tholasy, most of the complaints came from students and younger generation.
“These people are quite well-versed with GST,” he told Astro AWANI in an exclusive interview.
Subromaniam said most of the complaints were on the price hikes and differences of prices of products since the implementation of the new tax regime.
The government had introduced the GST, replacing the Sales and Services Tax (SST) on April 1 this year.
On the first day implementation of the new tax regime, a total of 815 complaints were received, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan had said.

Ahmad had said that out of the total, 40 percent were complaints on purchase of prepaid telephone reload cards that were also being imposed with GST charges.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had also directed the Customs and the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to look immediately into all complaints from consumers pertaining to GST.
He had said that all complaints from the public should be given due attention as it would smoothen implementation of the new tax system.
