More than 2,000 accidents in Selangor within five days
POLICE: From the total figure, 1,135 accidents were reported in municipal roads throughout Selangor
A total of 2,288 road accidents were reported in Selangor up to Friday since Ops Selamat 5 was launched on Monday, said Selangor Police Chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat.
He said the figure represented an increase of 119 cases compared with 2,169 cases for the same duration last year.
"Out of the 2,288 cases, 18 people including 10 motorcyclists lost their lives in 16 fatal accidents.
"From the total figure, 1,135 accidents were reported in municipal roads throughout Selangor," he said to reporters after the Road Safety Campaign Programme in conjunction with Ops Payung 5 here, Saturday.
Touching on break-ins throughout the five days since the start of Ops Selamat 5, Abu Samah said until Friday 48 cases were reported throughout Selangor compared with 81 cases for the same duration the previous year, a decline of 33 cases.
Ops Selamat 5/2014 launched on July 21 in conjunction with Aidilfitri will continue for 15 days.
Abu Samah advised road users to be careful while on the roads as the mass exodus from the city has started with people leaving to their hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya.
