More Indians, Chinese applying for jobs in civil service

Interest among non-Malays to join the civil service has increased by 70 per cent from June to December last year, compared with the same period in 2011, said Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman Tan Sri Mahmood Adam.

Mahmood Adam said based on the statistics compiled by PSC, 21,481 applications were received from Indian applicants which was a 79 per cent increase compared with the 12,009 applications received during the same period in 2011.

He added that 11,848 applications were received from Chinese applicants which was an increase of 77 per cent when compared to the 6,697 applications received for the same period in 2011.

"The increase is due to the concerted effort of the various committees that were formed to attract the interest of other races to apply for jobs in the civil service," he said.

Mahmood Adam said 814,659 applicants, looking for jobs in the publics service, had registered with the PSC last year and their application would be valid for five years, compared with just a year in the past.

He said 47,335 applicants were employed throughout last year comprising 33,427 Malays, 2,630 Chinese, 2,354 Indians and 8,924 others, including Bumiputera from Sabah and Sarawak.
