Gossip Girl

For those diehard Gossip Girl fans who never stopped watching the show, even after it got pretty ridiculous after the 3rd season – this is for you. Also, we all know the real reason most of us watched this “rich kids gone wild” TV show was for the high fashion (and Chuck & Blair). Our true OTP. In season 2’s finale Chuck waits for Blair outside the famed Plaza Hotel in NYC. He wears a dapper suit and Blair wore a chic Nanette Lepore green coat, accessorized with the classic Waldorf headband and stockings, both clearly fashionable. Now here’s the romantic bit – Chuck gave her a bouquet of pink peonies (Blair’s favourite flowers) and flew to Paris to attain her favourite macaroons from Pierre Hermé and to Germany to pick up her much-loved stockings! How romantic is that? A guy flew all over Europe to acquire all her favourite things!

Of course, this is Gossip Girl we are talking about so realism could be a 2 on a scale of 10. #OnlyForTheInsanelyRich

But a girl can dream.

I just need a man to fly to New York and get me a box of those covetable cronuts!

Chuck: We're inevitable, Waldorf.

Sex and the City

What can I say, like most women I’ve spent a lot of my free time watching reruns of Sex and the City or cosying up with my girlfriends swooning over their incredible wardrobe! But having spent 4 years in New York, I can tell you with certainty that it isn’t as easy as it looks to walk around in 5 inch stilettoes or to wear that body-conscious dress during winter in Greenwich Village. It’s a TV show ladies. However, I’m pretty sure Big and Carrie are one of my favourite TV couples! One of the most romantic scenes in SATC is when Big finally opens up to Carrie about memories he has with his parents. Eventually they start to dance the twist together and then start to slow dance with Moon River playing in the background. It’s such a simple moment, but you can see how happy they are with each other. They spend that time together laughing and smiling with each other. You could really feel the love that night. They were in classic black on black ensembles – very minimal but still so trendy.

Most fashionable moment would have to be when they were in Carrie’s elegant glowing white walk-in closet. Mr. Big and Carrie were lying down on the floor, cuddling and suddenly Big gets down on one knee to propose to Carrie, “Carrie Bradshaw, will you marry me?” and he does it with a shoe! #Swoon

Pretty Woman

A classic love story, the beautiful but confused streetwalker falls for the dashing rich man who doesn’t want her solely for her services. Richard Gere turns this working girl into a cultured, elegant lady played by Julia Roberts and all is right in the world. However the most romantic scene is when Vivian walks out in a stunning low-cut red gown, fully transformed into a refined woman and Richard Gere surprises her with jewellery (to be exact, a quarter of a million dollars’ worth) but cheekily closes the box on her. It’s all very playful and flirty and when Vivian said, “If I forget to tell you later, I had a really good time tonight” in the elevator, that moment was so sweet. Edward and Vivian looked like a million bucks as they rode their limo and flew the skies together on a private plane.

HER

Her, is an odd yet touching love story about a heartbroken guy (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls in love with his OS (operating system). If you’re scratching your head right now, remember that the operating system is voiced by the sexy Scarlett Johansson. It’s perfectly logical to imagine a guy lusting after an intangible piece of software if she’s the one doing the talking. The fashion for this Spike Jonze movie was a carefully curated throwback, best exemplified by the old-fashioned, high-waisted pants worn by Phoenix and other male characters. Timeless forties fashions, retro-futurism and a hint of Brooklyn hipster influences. Although Joaquin’s romantic partner isn’t exactly human and he walks around the city on dates with his OS fitted in his shirt pocket, the movie might put high-waisted pants back into men’s wardrobes. We have to admit that the scenes when Theodore was at the beach or out on the ocean with Sam, his OS was pretty dreamy and fashionable, with the vivid mishmash of old and new. And yay for collarless shirts.

Casablanca

Ilsa: When I said I would never leave you.
Rick: And you never will. But I've got a job to do, too. Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of. Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that.
[Ilsa lowers her head and begins to cry]
Rick: Now, now...
[Rick gently places his hand under her chin and raises it so their eyes meet]
Rick: Here's looking at you kid.

Need I say more? I think the orchestral heightening of the background music and the dreamy black and white film really won our hearts. When Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) and his old flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) parted ways at that airport runway – it definitely had me tearing up a little. Those two lovebirds in those stylish trench coats with their ‘40s charm, dazzling. The glamorous hair, the tilted fedora and the mystery of it all, oh it got us good.

The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann is known for two things: Theatricality and romance. And he plays his cards right in the romance department, especially in The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. The scene with the white orchids filling what seemed like every crevice of the room by Jay Gatsby still remains a prominent favourite for its sheer extravagance and boldness but charming us with Gatsby’s fidgety nervousness upon Daisy’s arrival. Oozing style in his off white suit he runs out the house and back in again (soaking wet). That moment when they first gazed into each other’s eyes – magical, plus it helps that Daisy’s lilac dress was an utter dream. Set costumer for the film, Catherine Martin received help from Miuccia Prada when it came to dressing the women which includes all of Daisy’s costumes. #ToDieFor
