Most Memorable Siblings In Film

Happy National Siblings Day! This is actually a thing, basically there is a day to celebrate any relation or personal bond you may have (with your mom, dad, pet, or a bowl of French fries). Name it, there is a day already allocated to unashamed hashtagging and post sentimental things about. It is not really difficult in coming up with cinema siblings and assessing their impression on the films they graced with hilarity, horror or self-indulgence. Whatever the combination may be, brother and sister, brother and brother, sister and sister, the big screen has always produced some of the most fascinating siblings to amuse, move or shock us.

Sometimes they speak a language all their own, sometimes they love each other to the moon and back and sometimes they want nothing more than to make each other suffer. Here are our picks for best SIBLINGS in film:

Step Brothers

When you think of brothers, these two pop to mind almost instantaneously! Two aimless middle-aged losers still living at home are forced against their will to become room-mates when their parents wed. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly really have incredible chemistry on screen as “brothers” but this relationship is so unforgettable because of quotes like these, “This is going to sound weird, but for a second, I think you took on the shape of a unicorn” or “Did we just become best friends?!!” Adults acting like kids, with amazing artillery of one-liners and a bag full of comebacks! We’re sold.

Sisters

Two sisters decide to throw one last house party before their parents sell their family home. This is a comedy which finds the sisters overcoming their differences in the service of an epic party in their soon-to-be-sold childhood home. It’s strangely touching watching these two sisters get over their differences as sorely overgrown adolescent ladies. Most memorable line from the movie, “We need a little less Forever 21 and a little more Suddenly 42!”

Frozen

Elsa and Anna, princesses and sisters who would sacrifice anything for each other. It’s rather characteristically Disney but the twist is that true love’s power isn’t from a prince or a dashing man, but of the unconditional love of a sister. The sisters argue a lot as the beginning of the film but later mend their relationship to save Arendelle (their kingdom). At the end of the film Anna, seeing that Hans is about to kill Elsa, throws herself between the two just as she freezes solid, blocking Hans' attack. A++ for sisterly love!

Little Miss Sunshine

Olive and Dwayne Hoover make the most unlikely endearing sibling relationship! Dwayne basically doesn’t say a word throughout the entire film, taking a vow of silence until he can accomplish his dream of becoming a test pilot and Olive is the youngest sibling and an aspiring beauty queen. Throughout the road trip to a beauty pageant, the family suffers numerous setbacks and even through all the mess, these two remain steadfast and each other’s support. Aww…

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

We love how the sibling relationship in this John Hughes film starts in classic cinematic conflict, rivalry mode, but ultimately redeem itself as love softens the heart of Jennifer Grey's resentful sister to Matthew Broderick in his pop-culture cemented iconic role!

Jeannie: (thinking to herself) Maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe Ferris isn't such a bad guy. After all, I got a car, he got a computer. But still, why should he get to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants? Why should everything work out for him? What makes him so goddamn special?

Jeannie: Screw him.

Haven’t we all felt that way about a sibling? We know we have. So this movie is absolutely relevant.

Stuck On You

Starring Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear as conjoined twins, whose conflicting aspirations provide both conflict and hilarious situations, in particular one of them wishes to move to Hollywood to pursue acting but the other would rather stay out of the spotlight. Stuck On You would appear to be about deformity, but really it's about brotherly love. There is a lot of real sentiment delivered in this film.

A League of Their Own

Kit and Dottie, baseball superstars and sisters. A scout passes through Oregon and finds Dottie Hinson, an unbelievable baseball player. He approaches her but she isn’t interested, but her sister Kit is. He only ends up agreeing to let Kit play if Dottie will join the team too. The film follows the sometimes rocky relationship between two sisters played by Geena Davis and Lori Petty, who go from small town to the major leagues.

Rain Man

The film is about an autistic man and his brother who takes care of him and finds the true meaning of brotherly love. The one scene that always gave us ‘all the feels’ would be when Tom Cruise comforts Dustin Hoffman and tells him that he likes having him as his big brother and they just sit there with their foreheads leaning against each other lovingly. “C-H-A-R-L-I-E, my main man” (cue the tears).
