Motorists using emergency lanes will be charged in court - RTD

Motorists who flout traffic rules by using emergency lanes will not be compounded for the offence but charged in court, says Road Transport Department (RTD) director-general Datuk Nadzri Siron.

He said 429 complaints were received on the offence between May 22 and June 24.

He said motorists who committed the offence could be fined RM2,000 or jailed six months, or both.

"We are taking a serious view and will not compromise with drivers who commit this offence," Nadzri told a media conference in conjunction with the 2016 Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri (HRA) here tonight.

He said this when asked to comment on a proposal that six traffic offences be taken straight away to court.

Meanwhile, he said the other five traffic offences were still under study.

The five offences comprise beating the traffic light; overtaking on the double lines; queue cutting; using cellphone while driving; and, overtaking and preventing others from overtaking.

"We are studying first whether the five offences will straight away be taken to court or otherwise. We will discuss with the court and also the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research," he said.

Yesterday, RTD Enforcement Division director Datuk V. Valluvan Veloo said the department planned to prosecute drivers committing six traffic offences throughout the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

Meanwhile, Nadzri said heavy vehicles would not be allowed to use main roads two days before and after the Hari Raya.
