The German ambassador to Malaysia Holger Michael on Wednesday described a lawmaker's tweet praising Adolf Hitler after Germany crushed Brazil in the World Cup as "unacceptable".
Bung Mokhtar Radin, a 55-year-old MP with the ruling United Malays National Organisation led by Prime Minister Najib Razak, congratulated Germany with a tweet saying "Well done ... Bravo ... Long Live Hitler".
In a response to the politician's tweet, the German ambassador said in a statement: "While we appreciate the admiration for the German football team, we strongly reject the unacceptable allusion to the fascist regime of Adolf Hitler".
Germany romped home to a record breaking 7-1 victory over Brazil to deal the host nation the worst semi-final defeat in World Cup history.
Despite coming under criticism for his "Hitler" tweet, Bung Mokhtar defended his action, saying it was done for fun.
Bung Mokhtar, whose hobbies include playing football, is a controversial politician in Malaysia, frequently drawing condemnation from women's groups and rights activists.
During an MPs' debate over a leaky parliament roof in 2007, Bung Mokhtar said: "Where is the leak? The Batu Gajah MP also leaks every month," referring to an opposition MP's menstrual cycle.
