M'sia seeks re-election to UN peace building commission organisational committee

Malaysia would continue to support peace building efforts and towards this end, it was offering itself for re-election, he said at a reception tonight to celebrate United Nations Day 2014 hosted by the deputy foreign minister.

"We hope to gain your support during the election scheduled for December this year," he told those present at the reception, who included ambassadors and high commissioners.

Hamzah pointed out that Malaysia was also offering support to countries in post-conflict through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP).

The Peacebuilding Commission was set up in 2005 to prevent countries emerging from conflict from relapsing into conflict.

It functions as an inter-governmental advisory body entrusted to coordinate and integrate approaches on post-conflict peacebuilding measures.

On Malaysia's election to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Hamzah said Malaysia looked forward to working together with all council members as well as the wider UN members.

"It is our intention to serve the UNSC responsibly to fulfil the mandate of the council as enshrined in the UN Charter," he said.

At the reception, a photo exhibition on Malaysia's contribution to the United Nations since 1957 was also held.
