The government is willing to increase the allocation for 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) if subsidies for essential items are reduced.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said by reducing the subsidy, the money can be distributed to the people.

He added the government can reduce up to RM456 million a year if the subsidy is wiped out.

“If we can reduce the subsidy for sugar or any other items, we can give more BR1M,” said Muhyiddin during a BR1M 2.0 distributing a ceremony in Segambut on Friday.

He said through that mechanism, added with the government’s income that has been increasing through the collection of taxes, it is not possible that BR1M can be increased.

Muhyiddin earlier distributed BR1M 2.0 to the people under the Segambut parliamentary constituency in Kuala Lumpur.

Over 2,600 single individuals living in that area received the aid worth RM250 each.

Muhyiddin on Friday said the government is ready to increase BR1M from RM500 to RM1,000 if Barisan Nasional was given the mandate at the 13th General Election.
